The Active LITTLE TEACHERS

ENGLISH SOCIETY LAUNCHED

To promote language learning and proficiency, Khadeeja Independent Girls School launched its very first English club, the English Society.

The club was organized to support the school’s mission to provide the students the assistance and the opportunities that will allow them to discover their potentials and capabilities.

English Society is an elite group of responsible, organised and intellectual students who will work harmoniously to achieve significant goals which are geared towards the students’ academic excellence primarily English Language proficiency. Furthermore, it has planned different activities where students will enjoy and will be given the chance to master the skills in English language learning. Such activities will include:

· Spelling Bee (Division Level)
· Master Tongue Twister (Division Level)
· Speech Choir Competition (Division Level)
· Poem Recital (Division Level)
· Interpretative Reading (Division Level)
· English Speaking Campaign

These activities will engage the students into various experiences which will help them become more confident and better English language learner, provide them the chance where they can work harmoniously in a larger group outside their classroom and encourage them to become more competitive.

There is a group of advisors who will help the students achieve these goals by actively engaging them into tasks which will eventually help them become more responsible and better students. This group has Ms Veronica Ignacio-Perez as the Chairman, Ms Muneera Al-Khuzaei as the Vice Chairman, Ms Nada Al-Ansari and Ms Linda Al-Saigel as the Creative Consultants, and Ms Sheema Shiekh as the Production Deputy.

CONGRATULATIONS, ENGLISH SOCIETY MEMBERS

October 12, 2006 – To put the plans into operation, the English Society started its very first audition for the interested students of Khadeeja Independent Girls School.

In the audition, which ended on November 14, 2006, students from grade one to grade six were asked to read and speak by the English Society’s advisors, namely, Ms Nada Al-Ansari, Ms Linda Al-Saigel and Ms Veronica Ignacio-Perez.

These are the students who passed the audition and became the very first group of English Society members.

ENGLISH SOCIETY LAUNCHES "ENGLISH SPEAKING CAMPAIGN"

· Students of Khadeeja will be encouraged to speak in English through this campaign.

· English Society members will be divided into five groups corresponding the days of the week.

· Such groups will be called "English Society Patrol".

· Every day, one group will be assigned to take note, encourage and commend those students who are speaking or trying to speak in English.

· The names and classes of the students speaking or trying to speak in English will be listed on the patroller's list and will then be recorded by the society.

· Every month, the class that will have the highest number of students speaking in English will be given an award or a certificate and points will then be awarded to its respective house.

KHADEEJA MAKES FRIENDS OVERSEAS

Few months ago, Khadeeja received a bunch of letters from a group of students from a school in Canada, the Sakamoto School.

The letters were from students who would like to have "pen pals" (someone you exchange letters with as a hobby but whom you usually have not met).

Ms Colynne Love, the grade three teacher in Sakamoto, was teaching her students how to write a letter. Instead of just writing letters in the class, they thought of writing letters for other students in another school and in another country so they posted an advertisement via internet. Ms Regina Saleh, Khadeeja's Academic Deputy, happened to see the ad and thought that it would be a very nice, educational and an exciting experience for the students. She then contacted Ms Colynne and that's how we received the letters.

In response, members of the English Society and some students with the help of Ms Regina Saleh and Ms Veronica Ignacio-Perez, English Society Chairman, wrote letters of reply.

In the big envelope, they did not only put their letters but they also included some pictures of the students and some of the things that we have done here in Khadeeja.

It was a whole new positive experience for the girls.

2-2, 3-4, 6-1 CHAMPIONS OF THE FIRST SPELLING BEE

Zainab Hosam (2-2), Sara Bashir (3-4) and Sara Saeed (6-1) were tested on their word knowledge and emerged as the champions in the very first Spelling Bee in Khadeeja held on February 22, 2007.

The best spellers of all the classes from grades 1 to 6 participated in the competition.

The contest was divided into 3 divisions: the first division for grades 1 and 2; the second for grades 3 and 4; and the third for grades 5 and 6.
Ms Linda Al-Saigel, the quiz master, read the words, which ranged from easy to average to difficult. The words written by the contestants were checked by the judges namely: Ms Maryam Al-Hajiri, Ms Nada Al-Ansari, Ms Regina Saleh and Ms Trisha Giusti.

After the first division, some members of the English Society from grades 4,5 and 6 performed a speech choir entitled "I am the People, the Mob."

This Spelling Bee was the first competition organized by the English Society.

ENGLISH SOCIETY, INSPIRING AND THRIVIN...

October 2006 – The very first English club was organized --- The English Society.

English Society is a special group of students from grades 1 to 6, who, for the past months, participated in different activities, programs and campaigns. These were all geared towards the students’ academic excellence and English Language proficiency, which have been the main goals of the society.

The organization started with an audition, where each potential member took turns and was told to say something about herself or was asked some questions by the English Society advisors, namely Ms Nada Al-Ansari, Ms Linda Al-Saigel, and myself. The answers were assessed and became the basis of being one of the members of the English Society.

From the members, the club officers were voted to represent the English Society. The officers were then tasked to obtain pieces of information from each of the members for the special identification card of the society.

After the election of officers, there were series of meetings to talk about the different activities and campaigns that the club had planned to accomplish within the school year. First of these was the English Speaking Campaign, where students of Khadeeja were encouraged to speak in English. This campaign started when the members were divided into five groups corresponding the days of the week. Such groups were called "English Society Patrol". In addition to these meaningful activities, the English Society launched its very first contest, the Spelling Bee. The best spellers of all the classes from grades 1 to 6 participated in the competition. Before the end of the school year, two active members of the English Society were awarded. Sara Ahmad and Hanan Mohammad of 6-4 both received certificates of recognition.

The society did not let the year end without recognizing the efforts done by the grade 6 members, who received their certificates on their graduation day.

All of the things that the society achieved were all for the students to become more proficient, cooperative, competitive, more confident and better English language learners.

Next year, if Allah permits, the English Society will attempt to complete this set of activities that were previously planned by the club.

2ND ANNUAL ENGLISH SPELLING BEE

The 2nd Annual English Spelling Bee was held at Golden Time on April 16, 2009. Ms. Veronica Perez, Founder of the English Society, was pleased to be having this 2nd Annual Spelling Bee. Master of Ceremonies were Shanaz Zakkir and Nada Ansari. The best three English spellers were selected from each class to participate. Grades 1-2-3 competed in the PE area, while grades 4-5-6 competed in the Main Hall. Trophies were given to the champion speller for each grade as well as silver and bronze medals to those who placed 2nd and 3rd. Certificates were also handed out to all participants. Audience involvement was encouraged and correct answers were awarded prizes. An enjoyable time was had by all! Congratulations to our winners and their families. Here is the list of winners:
